- ACT/Technico (www.acttechnico.com) and Motorola Computer Group's (NYSE: MOT) Global Services and Solutions (GSS) business have created a unique general-purpose telecom chassis for use in carrier grade and central office applications.
Driven by a major telecom customer, ACT/Technico worked with GSS as a Strategic Supplier to develop the NEBS compliant CPX1206S system platform.
The CPX1206S carrier-grade platform has been
designed for NEBS and ETSI environments. The chassis is a compact 4U chassis with standard or segmented CompactPCI(TM) backplane. The chassis uses a modular architecture featuring hot swappable active components, including fan modules, power supplies and an alarm module. All components are removable from the front of the chassis. Rear I/O transition modules allow for a variety of I/O solutions.
The system chassis design considers the use of multiple CPU architectures including SPARC, PowerPC, and Pentium(R). The chassis was specifically designed to allow SPARC and PowerPC processors to
be used concurrently. "Solving the thermal issues relative to the use of mixed architectures was one of the main design challenges encountered during development," said Bill Grob, engineering manager
of ACT/Technico.
"The chassis was designed as an enabling platform for one of our largest telecommunication customers," said Chris Aumann, vice president of integration, Motorola Computer Group.
"The collaboration of both Motorola and ACT/Technico's technology has played a key role in allowing the customer to remain on target with their development goals," she added.
ACT/Technico has
designed and integrated system solutions for a wide variety of organizations including NASA, AT&T, Ericsson, Lockheed Martin, and Oracle. Typical projects use some combination of custom designed and commercially
available hardware, as well as real-time software from WindRiver or LynuxWorks. ACT/Technico plans to use Microdrive products in many different types of systems, including real-time industrial control,
telecommunications and communication applications, ruggedized military systems and others.
About ACT/Technico ACT/Technico is a leading supplier of integrated real-time and embedded systems using
CompactPCI, VMEbus, and other platforms. They support several real-time operating systems, Linux and Windows. The company works with multiple market leaders such as Motorola and Force to support system architecture,
hardware, PCB and software design in order to deliver complete system solutions and expedite time-to-market.
ACT/Technico is also a manufacturer and reseller of real-time and embedded hardware and software
such as PMC modules, CompactPCI Adapters and Mass Storage modules.
The company was started in 1978 as a custom software and integration facility (ACT), and sales rep firm (Technico) in Warminster, PA. As
integration sales grew, a host of products were developed and manufactured, and the two company names were combined under the marketing name of ACT/Technico. There are additional offices in California and
